    Play.com Review

From a band clearly relishing the opportunity to experiment without compromising their quality of song writing, Tonight is the third album from Franz Ferdinand. The monumental success of their self-titled debut, swiftly followed by You Could Have It So Much Better, firmly established the Glasgow quartet as chart favourites. After a two year rest, Tonight combines the energy of their earlier work with a newfound sense of musical exploration.

As if they'd never been away, hit single `Ulysses' launches the release with a stylish disco rhythm and a rousing sing-along chorus, likely to impress both new and long-term admirers. 'No You Girls' is equally infectious, but the stop-start rhythm of `Turn It On' and the garage-influenced `What She Came For' offer new substance to the established Franz sound. The fuzzy electronica of `Can't Stop Feeling' is a radical departure, but the bass-heavy groove of `Bite Hard' is likely to be a live favourite. Perhaps the biggest surprise is 'Lucid Dreams' - comprising of nearly eight minutes of darkly psychedelic musical fantasies, the track is unpredictable yet somehow retains a jubilant pop sensibility. Meanwhile, the glorious instant pop gem `Send Him Away' offers a faithful nod back to The Kinks, before the album ends on the folk influenced `Katherine Kiss Me'.

Striding positively into new musical landscapes, with snappy guitars often overlooked in favour of big beats and layered keyboards, there is no question that Franz Ferdinand are a band keen to push the boundaries of the catchy pop/rock song format. Yet, with their trademark frantic energy and the signature vocals of Alex Kapranos, Tonight remains satisfyingly danceable, and, as a result, could easily be considered the perfect third album.

I have a been a big fan of Franz Ferdinand since their first album. When, I heard they were releasing a third album I was ultra excited but was really quite disappointed with the outcome. Although its every artists prerogative to grow and change direction I just don't think Franz have progressed for the better. Didn't think much of their first single "Ulysses" whereas, their previous first releases off their other two album were blinding tunes. "No You Girls" is one of the only tracks that see Ferdinand back on form. I wouldn't recommend this CD but if you're a fan, you're going to check it out regardless. For people who are not yet convinced download "No You Girls", its brilliant.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Not bad but not as good as it could have been

With the previous two albums there have been tracks I have loved and tracks I have hated. I don't get the same feeling with this one. Other than one track which I love (Katherine Kiss Me) the rest barley registers any emotion with me. There is nothing much wrong with other tracks. They sound fine while listening to them but little sticks in the memory afterwards. It is clear they have put a lot of time and effort into this but the songs just seem to have lost that spark which made the band so special.
